Our History

The modern multi-story Quality Inn and Suites Garden of the Gulf traces its origins back to 1938, when the late Vaughan Groom, embarked on the family’s hospitality journey with a set of modest roadside cabins. Over the years, these cabins evolved into a motel, and later, into a resort-themed inn. Vaughan's forward-thinking vision led to the property joining the Choice Hotels network 67 years ago, in 1957.

This partnership was a significant move, bringing new business opportunities to PEI. As a result, the Summerside Quality Inn and Suites became Canada’s oldest Choice location and one of the oldest properties in the now global Choice Hotels chain. The network initially connected independent accommodation owners along the newly developed I-95 corridor from Canada to Florida.

After Vaughan, the property was managed by his son Alfred, a former Canadian record-holding pole vaulter. Today, Alfred’s son, David Groom, oversees the property, including Brothers 2 restaurant, with the next generation, Spencer Groom, poised to continue the family legacy.

The property is also home to Brothers 2 restaurant, which opened in 1971 under the leadership of Don Groom. It proudly hosts Canada’s longest-running dinner theatre. Even in retirement, Don Groom, David’s uncle, remains involved, regularly checking in on the properties.

To keep up with modern trends, both the main building and the secondary building, known as Simpson Court, have undergone significant renovations. Additionally, a new pickleball court has been added, along with facilities for bike rentals and guest bike storage, further enhancing the property's appeal.
